Moving in Checklist
Going to university is an exciting time in your life, but moving into your student accommodation doesn’t have to be stressful.
Before the move, there are some items you should pick up that will help you add a personal touch to your room or flat and make it easier to settle once you arrive.
Then again, there are some things that you actually won’t need.
To help you hit the ground running, here is our checklist of things you need to remember when moving into your student accommodation – starting with kitchen and bedroom items that’ll help you eat and sleep well.
For Your Kitchen
In most cases, furnished halls of residence come fully equipped with all the kitchen items you’ll need. Here at dwell, we provide each flat with a kettle, a toaster, and a microwave. However, it’s worth checking what your accommodation provides before you move. If unsure, consider taking the following:
- Tea cups and coffee mugs
- Pans
- Cutlery, including sharp knives
- Bowls and plates
- Chopping boards
- Baking trays
- A wooden spoon
- A pizza slice
- A toastie-maker
- Bin bags, foil, cling film, tea towels
- A packed lunch box
- Some delicious recipes to impress your new friends!
For Your Bedroom
Sleep has many cognitive benefits and will help you work to your potential. So that you can catch forty winks in comfort – whether that’s after an all-nighter in the library or you need an afternoon nap – you should take the following bed-related and bedroom items with you.<?p>
- A duvet
- At least two sets of bed sheets
- A mattress protector
- Clothes hangers
- A clothes horse
- A blanket
- A small mirror
- A clock or alarm clock
- A laundry basket
- A desk fan
- A nice-smelling diffuser
- A door stop
- Some photographs of friends and family
- Some artwork and/or posters
For the Bathroom
According to The Student Room, 20% of men and 18% of women find their true loves at university. This means that you’ll want to be fresh whether you’re heading out to a seminar, to the library for a study session, or to town on a student night out. So that you don’t forget any self-care items, here are some things you’ll need for your student bathroom:
- Towels and hand towels
- Toilet rolls
- Toilet cleaner, bleach, toilet brush
- Flip flops or shower shoes (mainly for communal showers)
- A dressing gown
- A hairbrush
- A hairdryer
- Hair straighteners
- Razors and shaving cream
- Sanitary products
- A fully stocked first-aid kit
Electricals
From your laptop for completing assignments and binge-watching Netflix, to useful wires, leads, and adapters, you’ll need to take a few electrical items with you to your accommodation. When you’re thinking about what to pack for university, don’t forget the following:
- Laptop, tablet, and smartphone (and a spare phone, if possible)
- Television
- Portable or wireless speakers
- Headphones
- Charging cables
- USB, ethernet, extension, or HDMI cables
- External hard drive
- Games console, games, and controllers
- USB sticks (or save documents onto the cloud)
- TV stick (Chromecast, for instance)
- A laptop mouse
Academic Items
Prepare yourself for the start of your course by getting hold of the following stationery items (or just wait until freshers’ week and pick up freebies at freshers’ fairs!). These items will help you stay organised throughout your assignments and revision, and, importantly, will mean you won’t have to ask your flatmates to lend you anything:
- Pens and pencils
- Pencil case
- Folders
- Journal or diary
- Writing pad
- Calculator
- Textbooks
- Highlighters
What Not to Take to University
You’ll make at least one mistake when deciding what to take with you to university. Don’t worry, though, because you can buy lots of things once you arrive. For instance, waiting to buy toiletries saves on space during transit. Meanwhile, you should only take the clothes you need – not your entire wardrobe.
Here’s what not to take with you to university:
- Soap, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, etc.
- A printer (nowadays, university printing is cheap)
- Your entire wardrobe

Packing for moving into student accommodation doesn’t need to be stressful. Don’t fret, because if you forget to take anything, you’ll be able to pick it up cheaply once you’ve arrived and settled in.
